Warrakirri College and Walkers Moving and Storage: School-to-Work Program
Warrakirri College has recently joined forces with the organisation, Walkers Moving and Storage in order to establish the School-to-Work program. The program is a collaboration between the two organisations that assists in developing the link between education and workforce skills for young students aiming to provide them with valuable workplace experience and the opportunity for future part time paid work.
The General Manager of Walkers Moving and Storage, Juliette Strickland, states the industry is facing a shortage of young employees which is generating the need to attract them furthering the idea that the partnership is the perfect way to offer training and employment to students. The location of the organisation is also a convenience to the students being in the same area, making it easy to get to whilst also attending classes.
Walkers Moving and Storage works with Warrakirri College via input to the curriculum to match working sector skills, frequent workshops, assembly presentations, and offering continuous work experience opportunities. The program offers pathways to students such as the Learn and Earn initiative that enables selected students to undertake work experience and develop on the job skills and learning whilst receiving not only qualifications but also compensation for their efforts.
Principal Carloyn Blanden of Warrakirri College says the program gives students a chance to interface with a real employee and not just focus on the written theory. The knowledge and skills necessary for the work force also sound much more authentic coming from a person who represents an industry and has jobs to offer.
The partnership between Warrakirri and Walkers Moving and Storage provides a solid foundation for building talented and skilled young people that are eager and ready for the workforce by giving them the training and confidence they need to pursue their goals. The program also offers the opportunity for students to gain tangible and necessary skills such as reliability, problem solving, critical thinking conscientiousness, listening and observation, effective communication, and teamwork.
The benefits of the program are a “Win-Win-Win” as it gives employers a strategic way to close the youth shortage gap within the industry, assists Warrakirri College to increase retention and completion while preparing students for life beyond schooling, and offers young people the chance to participate in work experience to earn income or valuable skills for future careers. The School-to-Work program is a fantastic and opportunistic initiative within MTC Australia for the future of young people and establishing successful employment.
