Barista training provides a boost
As part of our ongoing commitment to providing career and employment opportunities to young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, MTC Australia’s Opportunity Hub Campbelltown recently invited 16 students from Years 11 and 12 to complete a 5-week Barista course at Campbelltown TAFE.
The Opportunity Hub students from various schools in the area participated in the course one day a week and received practical, hands-on learning focused on the hospitality industry.
While their coffee-making skills definitely improved, the students also gained confidence in communication, collaboration, time management, customer service, and multi-tasking. All of which are highly valued transferable skills for jobs in the majority of industries.
During the course, the students completed two accredited units and are now considered to be qualified Baristas. They will be able to use this experience to look for work as a Barista or in the hospitality industry. These accredited units could also be used to progress to various Hospitality courses offered by TAFE NSW.
At the end of the courses, the students held a small presentation where they demonstrate their new Barista skills to invited guests, resulting in many delicious coffees and milkshakes!
Congratulations to our Opportunity Hub students on completing this course, we can’t wait to taste what you have in store for us!
