Good News Story

Shaun’s story

Shaun, one of our First Nation clients, joined our Workforce Australia program late last year, and his determination and resilience in the face of adversity have truly inspired us.

At MTC Australia, we believe in empowering individuals to overcome the barriers they face so they can find fulfilling work. Shaun, one of our First Nation clients, joined our Workforce Australia program late last year, and his determination and resilience in the face of adversity have truly inspired us.

When we met him, Shaun had recently relocated to Sydney from Pilbara, a rural mining region in Western Australia. His job-seeking journey was fraught with obstacles; his main skill was driving heavy rigid vehicles, but after the COVID-19 pandemic and in the aftermath of major floods, the mining industry had become unpredictable. Shaun found himself in temporary accommodation, struggling to maintain stability in his livelihood.

Since engaging with MTC, Shaun’s transformation has been nothing short of remarkable. With the unwavering support of his dedicated team, he achieved significant milestones that shaped his success story.

Shaun’s journey began with coaching, mentoring, and emotional support from his Health and Wellbeing Coach Jonathan at our Marrickville branch. Jonathan reviewed Shaun’s resume and ensured he had the necessary personal protective equipment to commence work.

Recognising the importance of stable living arrangements, we promptly connected Shaun with Aboriginal Hostels Limited, providing him with immediate accommodation support through the Australian Government initiative.

To improve his financial situation and cover relocation costs, Shaun was referred to Recruitment Coach Roy and Industry Engagement Manager Melati. They connected him with temporary labouring positions, allowing him to regain stability, recent experience, and financial independence while we continued to work towards finding him a permanent job.

Thanks to Shaun’s willingness to explore new opportunities, he was referred to an Indigenous Job Seeker Employment Session held with the help of Yilabara Solutions, where his potential caught the attention of Indigeco, and Shaun received an invitation to interview with them.

MTC’s support continued to be instrumental in Shaun’s journey. We facilitated his Rail Safety Worker Induction Training and helped him obtain his RIW card by arranging the necessary training. Soon, Indigeco offered him a position as a Railway Labourer.

Throughout the Workforce Australia program, Shaun exhibited exceptional qualities that set him apart. His resilience in the face of countless hurdles was unwavering. Shaun’s kind and respectful nature, coupled with his eagerness to learn, enabled him to forge meaningful connections with people from various organisations and departments. He embraced feedback and implemented changes to achieve better outcomes.

Shaun’s success story is not just a personal triumph but also a testament to the power of collaboration. By connecting people and organisations, Shaun demonstrated that overcoming challenges is possible when trust and support are in place. He embodies the spirit of resilience, growth, and healing that we aim to foster at MTC Australia.

We are incredibly proud of Shaun’s achievements and grateful to have played a part in his journey. Shaun’s story serves as a shining example of how determination, resilience, and a supportive community can transform lives.
