Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)

MTC Australia is committed to understanding, measuring and addressing our impact on our local communities and more widely.

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG)

At the heart of MTC Australia’s vision and purpose, is the shaping of a society where everyone has the means and motivation to create a life of their choosing. Our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles are a key element in ensuring we deliver on that commitment.

Through our progress towards a comprehensive ESG Strategy, MTC Australia will be a catalyst for positive change within the employment services and education and training sectors. We aspire to set a new standard for responsible, innovative and impactful operations within the not-for-profit space.

In late 2023, MTC Australia commenced ESG reporting through leading impact technology firm Socialsuite. This initiative allowed MTC Australia to set a baseline against Socialsuite’s ESG framework, which references a range of existing sustainability frameworks, including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Environmental Leadership

MTC Australia’s commitment to climate action is closely aligned with the Australian government’s net-zero target. As a government-funded social enterprise, we recognise the national imperative to address climate change and contribute to the collective effort to achieve net-zero emissions. Our initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and embrace sustainable practices are in line with global sustainability goals and the Australian Government’s vision for a low-carbon economy.

Our dedication to sustainability aligns with our broader mission to create positive social impact and improve the lives of those we serve, both now and in the future.

Beyond being a responsible choice, our focus on climate action is also a strategic decision that positions MTC Australia as a proactive organisation that collaborates with quality partners and top talent who share our values. In November 2023, MTC Australia took the first step on our Carbon Reduction journey, conducting our inaugural Carbon Footprint measurement activity through climate-tech platform Trace.

Trace issued MTC Australia a “Carbon Measured” badge and the activity measured MTC’s Carbon Footprint at the lower end of the services industry benchmark. The results of an employee survey together with data collated internally showed MTC’s FY2023 Co2 emissions totalled 137.5t. That’s equivalent to 23,320 shipping containers of pollution. The services industry benchmark band is 3-10Co2/FTE and MTC’s result is 4.14 per FTE. Another area assessed through the survey was the sentiment of the entire MTC team about climate action. Seventy-two per cent of MTC employees said they found it personally important to take climate action.

In early 2024, MTC established a Sustainability Working Group formed with representatives from all parts of the organisation to ensure we have engagement and input from across MTC. Our aim this year will be to work on the development of a Carbon Reduction Strategy, developing ways to further reduce our carbon footprint, and setting appropriate targets for our company-wide efforts.

Social Impact

Each year, MTC Australia supports more than 20,000 people across NSW and QLD. We work closely with these vulnerable people who are often experiencing disadvantage to enable them with new skills, confidence and opportunities. MTC’s support sees people experience positive change in themselves and in their contribution to the community.

Our team of 450 dedicated people based at more than 40 locations across Greater Sydney and Queensland have extensive experience and the passion needed to inspire people from all walks of life to discover and achieve their ambitions and to reach their full potential.

Our proven programs and government-funded initiatives help people build capacity and skills and find the right opportunities for sustainable work and a meaningful life. Through these programs, we’re also well-placed to help employers find and hire job-ready staff who will become valuable assets to any workforce. We also deliver nationally accredited training courses and innovative youth programs and offer specialist recruitment services through MTC Recruitment.

As a social enterprise, we support and empower disadvantaged Australians, by reinvesting surplus back into social impact initiatives aligned to our purpose.

Corporate Governance

MTC Australia understands the role of robust corporate governance in guiding and shaping our organisation’s trajectory. We have an established corporate governance framework that ensures transparency and integrity within our operations and is a testament to our dedication towards ethical conduct and fostering trust and collaboration with our stakeholders.

Our Vision is underpinned through our Strategic Plan, To shape a society where everyone has the means and motivation to create a life of their choosing. The plan is a roadmap for our day-to-day operations and ensuring we are always aligned with our purpose.

Our Board and Executive Leadership Team (ELT) has extensive experience across key areas such as financial and commercial management, digital technology, brand strategy, communications, and change management. The Board provides strategic direction and governance over the ELT’s delivery of the Strategic Plan.

The MTC Australia Board, Audit Investment and Risk Committee and ELT have oversight of the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) program, and are dedicated to the continuous improvement in their governance practices. We acknowledge the evolving nature of ESG risks and opportunities and are committed to adapting our approach to ensure best practice.
