Cecily’s Story
Cecily arrived at MTC Australia’s Chermside Workforce Australia site appearing frail and disheartened and facing multiple barriers in her attempt to secure meaningful work.
The MTC team greeted Cecily warmly in person and she also received an onboarding email to guide her journey. At the first in-person meeting, Cecily and her Health and Wellbeing Coach Neha completed MTC’s comprehensive intake survey together, discussing Cecily’s background and the barriers she was experiencing. Through respectful questioning it became clear that Cecily struggled with anxiety and other mental health issues and was battling alcoholism. She was also limited by the fact that public transport was her only way of travelling to interviews and work.
MTC Coach Neha created a strategic and supportive plan to tackle Cecily’s barriers including a referral to MTC’s Allied Health program. Cecily and her Allied Health Support Worker explored the issues underlying her mental health challenges, helped her develop new coping strategies and worked on behaviour changes to address her alcohol dependency.
Once this work was progressing, MTC Coach Neha referred Cecily to the Employability Skills Training (EST) program to help her gain the skills and tools needed for a fresh start in the workforce. During the EST course, Cecily explored different career options and identified an interest in the Childcare sector.
After a discussion, MTC Health and Wellbeing Coach Neha enrolled Cecily into a Childcare Traineeship, where she not only discovered a newfound passion but also embraced a fulfilling career.
During the time MTC was supporting Cecily, we provided assistance with interview clothing: Police Check, Birth certificate, Blue card, Go card topup, work clothing, First Aid & CPR course, and a new mobile phone.
Today, Cecily is more than a year alcohol-free, gainfully employed, and radiating happiness in her full-time role in the Childcare sector. Her success is a testament to the power of resilience, support, and the potential for positive change.
Cecily was kind enough to send the MTC team a note about her experience and updating us on her new life.
“My time with MTC has been life changing. I really won the lottery with my job provider, Neha. Supportive to a fault, Neha masterfully adapted her approach to allow for my individual limitations and a personal crisis I was battling. Her empathy with top professionalism was admirable and, to me, invaluable. Her insider knowledge and connections are sought-after. Neha knew when pushing me would be unconstructive, but also when it was exactly what I needed. I always felt completely safe to take wild chances. She taught me the transferable skills that I never knew I had and helped me rediscover some that I had let lay dormant,” Cecily said.
“The world has suddenly opened up and I can do anything I want to with the right plan. Neha engaged me in valuable activities and pursued achievable and exciting career paths for me. I had my pick of safe and guaranteed jobs, as well as jobs that point toward my ultimate life goals. What became totally evident was that for as much effort as I was willing to put in, Neha was willing to reciprocate. And my future blossomed. I am now receiving a full-time pay check for doing a job that I absolutely love and raving to all about my success to all who will listen! Neha remains a friendly support that is only a phone call away for anything that I need,” she said.
“My time with Neha has dissolved all my fears and trepidations. I am now earning, learning, gaining a qualification and I have a real feeling of purpose. I’ll be thanking you forever.”
