Gaining essential life skills through the SEE Program
Limited knowledge about computers, emails and workplace technology was holding Peter back from securing meaningful work.
Peter joined the Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program in late 2024 at MTC Australia’s Wollongong Training Centre to improve his computer skills and keep up with today’s technology.
Peter initially struggled with job applications and felt as though his age was holding him back. With limited knowledge about computers, typing, or sending emails, he enrolled in the SEE Program to learn these important life skills to improve his chance of securing meaningful work.
Through the SEE Program, Peter learned to confidently compose and send emails, prepare for interviews, put together his resume, and present himself professionally. By mastering these essential job skills, Peter was empowered to keep trying to secure employment.
With his newfound confidence and abilities, Peter was quickly offered a job trial and an interview with two separate organisations. On the day of his online interview, Peter came to MTC Wollongong to practise using the link to connect to Teams with the help of his trainer. He also wrote down questions to ask, and practised responding to questions like the dreaded “tell me about yourself” question. Peter entered the interview feeling nervous but soon relaxed. Afterwards, he felt confident in his performance. He discussed the two roles with his trainer and decided to accept the full-time position that was offered to him after a trial period.
Peter said he found the experience at MTC very enjoyable, “The atmosphere was friendly, the class was easy to follow, and the trainer was very supportive, encouraging and patient.”
Peter’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the personalised support he received through the SEE Program. His story shows that with determination and guidance, it’s never too late to learn new skills and overcome challenges.
