Good News Story

Michael’s Story

Michael had worked as a gardener for almost 15 years before coming to MTC Australia’s Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program searching for an improved career path.

Michael’s story is one that many people share when they walk through the doors at MTC Australia – they have been working in one industry for a long time and they’re looking for a chance to pivot and create an improved career path for themselves.

After working as a gardener for almost 15 years, and feeling disillusioned with his financial situation, Michael found himself in need of a career change. His job provider referred him to MTC Australia’s Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program, which he began with us at our Hornsby site.

Throughout his SEE training, Michael learned the essential skill of crafting a compelling resume and cover letter, along with vital digital literacy skills, including using web browsers to search for information, Gmail proficiency, file uploading and downloading. The course also gave Michael the opportunity to gain a solid grasp of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. He also improved his proficiency in using online meeting platforms such as Zoom, which will enable him to take part in remote job interviews if needed. Michael also improved his reading and writing capabilities.

Equipped with a refreshed resume and newfound confidence, Michael was able to apply for a new job at Willoughby Council’s Parks and Gardens team. Successful in his application, Michael has now secured sustainable employment where he will be paid fairly and have the opportunity to work towards a promotion to become a team leader. In his new role, he will be required to use digital applications to report job progress, receive necessary information, and communicate with others. Thanks to his newly acquired digital literacy skills through the SEE program, he is in good stead to fulfil all the requirements of his new role.

This new job is not just another job for Michael. It is a whole new chapter in his career that shows how broadening his skillset and improving his confidence opened new doors to improve his professional and personal life.
