Good News Story

Olivia’s story

Olivia was born in Uganda and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya before arriving in Australia. She has needed to overcome several overwhelming barriers during her search for employment, including grief, domestic violence, and trauma.

Unfortunately, refugees are not treated well in Kenya, and while she was in the refugee camp, Olivia experienced discrimination and restricted freedom while the country was also suffering through a drought. A few months after she arrived in Australia, Olivia found a position as a Library Assistant for a short period of time and then began a traineeship for a community radio station. However, the workplace culture at the radio station was so unbearably toxic it reminded her of how she was treated in Kenya.

Olivia knew she needed to leave her traineeship and signed up for the job seeker payment.

It was at this point that Olivia was referred to MTC Australia’s Workforce Australia service. Olivia is a naturally driven person, and she came to MTC with an amazing mindset and a goal already in place; she wanted a traineeship in business.

Olivia’s Recruitment Coach worked with and supported Olivia so she could meet all her Workforce Australia requirements while focusing on achieving her goal of a traineeship.

Upon recommendation, Olivia reached out to the Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland and was successful in securing a traineeship with a not-for-profit organisation, Micah Projects. Micah Projects helps people in the community who are in crisis, and Olivia is very happy and feels extremely supported doing her traineeship with an organisation that cares about people. She is confident that her traineeship will give her the skills and experience she needs for great employment opportunities in the future.

MTC is continuing to support Olivia through her traineeship, assisting her with mentoring, work attire, and driving lessons. We’re excited to see how Olivia’s career progresses, as she has the skills, personality, and determination to be an asset to any organisation.

Good luck, Olivia!
