Good News Story

Samuel M’s Story

Samuel’s goal when he first arrived at MTC Australia was clear – he wanted to gain employment in the retail sector. However, he faced barriers due to medical issues and needed support to build his confidence.

The MTC Australia team greeted Samuel warmly when he arrived at the Mitchelton site and he also received an onboarding email to guide his journey.

Samuel and his Employment Coach completed MTC’s comprehensive intake survey together at an in-person meeting. This discussion helped Samuel, a First Nations client, explain his medical and other barriers which include Osteoporosis, bulging disc and injuries to his lower limbs as well as anxiety and depression. He also does not hold a driver’s licence and is therefore dependent on public transport.

To achieve his goal of securing work in the retail sector, Samuel’s Employment Coach worked with him on his resume and interview skills before referring him to Employability Skills Training (EST). Through the EST course, Samuel gained valuable workplace skills.

Samuel and his Employment Coach discussed a range of employment opportunities and he was referred to: Chemist Warehouse program, Fruit Shop Retail Assistant at Stafford, Concentrix Client Ramp, Housekeeping at Hotel X Brisbane, Customer Support Consultant with TSA Brisbane and DATAMARS (Banyo) Customer Service. Samuel’s Employment Coach also regularly sent emails with SEEK job opportunities.

Assistance was also provided with printed copies of Samuel’s resume, a fuel card and work clothing.

Samuel was referred to a work trial at Mr Minit which increased his confidence in his customer service skills. Sadly, this trial did not evolve into ongoing employment.

Through consistent communication and co-operation, Samuel finally succeeded in securing the customer service role that he and his Employment Coach had been working so hard towards – a Customer Service role at Kmart.

We wish Samuel all the best in his life.
