Good News Story

Wowok’s story

After completing Career Transition Assistance, Wowok said the was perfect for people who need knowledge and information to find new pathways or want to change their career.

Wowok started MTC Australia’s Career Transition Assistance (CTA) program with face-to-face training in March 2020 just before lockdown began and  shortly after transitioned to online classes to complete the program.

Wowok had previously been in cleaning and customer service roles, and although he was very enthusiastic about re-entering the workforce, he was not clear about his goals.

His trainer recommended he apply at Woolworths, as this large organisation would give him scope to explore different parts of the business and opportunities.

Within two weeks of starting online CTA training, Wowok started casual work at Paddington Metro (Woolworths), and was soon working across different departments. His hours were regular initially, however, shortly after his hours were decreased due to accommodating employment for former Qantas and Virgin staff.

Despite his disappointment and frustration, he persisted and continued to contact managers for more hours. Soon after, Wowok secured full-time work at Woolworths in Double Bay (coffee shop) and he was advised that in a couple of months he may be promoted to Supervisor.

In a recent letter Wowok sent to the MTC Marrickville team, he wrote “At my age it’s difficult to find a job even though I have many skills, as lots of companies want Higher Education Certificates. When I started the CTA program it was so amazing, it gave me a lot of tips and information about jobs, helped me make resumes for different fields and gave me knowledge about job interviews.”

“My trainer was really kind, lovely and so helpful. She gave me a lot of knowledge and tricks, and helped me make resumes for different jobs I applied for. She supported me when I was in difficult times and struggled to find my pathway, and she gave me confidence and instructions with which pathway to choose. I really support the CTA program for people who need knowledge and information to find new pathways or want to change their career because they’re bored with doing the same activity/job for a long period,” Wowok said.
