Refer to Employability Skills Training (EST)
Is your customer looking to build their employability skills and enter the workforce? MTC Australia’s Employability Skills Training (EST) helps your customer build the skills they need to be ready for work. Our EST program gives them the skills, motivation and confidence they need to search for a job and attend interviews, as well as the practical skills and knowledge that will help them succeed in the workplace.
How can EST help your customer
MTC’s EST Program is an approved Activity that equates to 20 PBAS (Points Based Activation System) for 25 hours per week (full time) and 15 PBAS for 15 hours per week (part time). It may also entitle you to a Progress Payment if your customer completes at least 80% of either the part time or full time course.
Course Types
Our targeted, intensive training is tailored to your customer’s level of experience, ranging from beginner to advanced. Our EST courses cover three skill levels:
Introductory Course
Your customer will explore their skills and the career options available to them while they prepare their resume and practice their interview skills.
Generalist Course
Your customer will receive targeted training to help them understand the industry they would like to enter. They will learn to focus and refine their practical skills while also receiving hands-on experience with onsite workplace tours, networking opportunities, and access to MTC’s Industry Knowledge Hub.
Specialist Course
In the Specialist Course, your customer will gain important, industry-specific skills and knowledge to help them succeed in their chosen career. Our Specialist Course industries include:
- Construction
- Childcare
- Hospitality
- Retail
Who is eligible for EST?
Our EST program is separately tailored for youth aged 15–24, people aged 25 and over and an open age group which includes people aged 15 years and older, ensuring that we can provide practical training that is useful for each participant’s career path.
To be eligible for our EST program, your customer must be:
aged 15 or over
currently participating in a Workforce Australia, Workforce Australia Online, Transition to Work (TtW), or Disability Employment Services (DES) program
How to refer to EST
You can refer your customer to MTC’s EST program by following this step-by-step guide to help you through the process or you can simply contact our Customer Care team for assistance:

Please complete the below form as soon as you complete the referral process into Employability Skills Training in the Workforce Australia System via the provided Activity ID. This will enable us to communicate with you directly and to receive our attendance, progress, and completion emails.

Our EST program offers your customer three different courses that are tailored to their individual needs, goals, and abilities.

Introductory Course:
Explore, Prepare and Practice
If your customer is unsure of the industry they’d like to work in or the best role for them, then the EST Introductory Course is the perfect place to start. It covers the broad range of skills participants need to enter or re-enter the job market.
The topics covered in this course include:
How to understand the local job market and find opportunities.
Job search and interview skills.
Communication skills for work.
How to make the right impression at work.
Training and education pathways.
Skills for career planning.
Additionally, your customer will have access to digital resources to support their learning, including:
Sample job descriptions and selection criteria.
Sample resumes and cover letters.
Recorded Masterclasses on applying for jobs, job requirements, and expectations such as dress codes.
Generalist Course:
Focus, Refine and Apply
This course is suitable if your customer is seeking more targeted Employability Skills Training and to gain an understanding of the industry sector they’d like to enter. It includes a range of Industry Awareness Experiences, which help participants explore different industries and workplaces, and get hands-on experience with workplace skills.
The topics covered in this course include:
Online job applications.
Creating network profiles, e.g. LinkedIn.
Document formatting.
Tailoring cover letters and resumes.
Exploring specific job-related technology and occupational requirements.
Improving job search and presentation skills for roles and refining career choices.
Your customer will also have access to a variety of digital resources and IAEs to support their learning, including:
Virtual industry/workplace library.
Industry knowledge hub.
Micro Skills Acquisition Stations, e.g. Point of Sales systems, iPads, and EFTPOS machines.
In-class/online employer presentations.
Workplace tours.
Mock and real-time interviews.
Alumni program.
Specialist Course:
Target and Try
(Childcare, Retail, Construction and Hospitality)
Our specialist EST courses offer targeted skills training in a range of industry sectors, including Childcare, Retail, Construction, and Hospitality.
We will support your customer in applying for suitable work with our employer contacts. Additionally, some courses also offer micro-credentials including White Card (Construction) and First Aid (Childcare).
Your customer will have access to a variety of digital resources and Industry Awareness Experiences to support their learning, including:
Virtual industry/workplace library.
Industry knowledge hub.
Micro Skills Acquisition Stations, e.g. Point of Sales systems, iPads, and EFTPOS machines.
In-class/online employer presentations.
Workplace tours.
Mock and real-time interviews.
Alumni program.
Course Duration
MTC offers flexible study options to all of our customers, ensuring we can meet their individual needs and circumstances. Each EST course is completed over 75 hours and can be undertaken as follows:
Full-time study
Monday – Thursday
6.15 hours per day over 3 weeks
Part-time study
Monday – Thursday
3.45 hours per day over 5 weeks
Fee Information
MTC Australia must charge referring employment services provider (excluding Yarrabah) the applicable EST fee if we accept a referral for an EST customer.
The EST charge can now be paid for out of the Employment Fund. Referring providers will be invoiced once their customer commences the EST Course.
