Do you have a participant who wants to start or grow a small business? Could they benefit from business mentorship and government support? Help them begin their journey by referring them to Self-Employment Assistance.
What is Self-Employment Assistance?
Self-Employment Assistance is a government-funded initiative designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs and eligible business owners realise their dreams through business training, expert mentoring, and income support.
Self-Employment Assistance training component at MTC is an approved activity that equates to 25 PBAS (Points Based Activation System) points per week. Each service within Self-Employment Assistance equates to a different number of points.

Business Advice Sessions
15 points per session
(for up to 2 sessions per year)
Business Health Checks
20 points per check
(1 check per year)
Exploring Self-Employment Workshop
20 points per workshop
Business Plan Development
25 points per completed business plan
Small Business Training
25 points per week
Progress Payments are available to Workforce Australia providers upon your participant successfully completing the full-time course (Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business). MTC Australia provides evidence of course completion with an approved Record of Results statement. This training is funded by the Commonwealth Government.
Who is eligible for Self-Employment Assistance?
To participate in Self-Employment Assistance, your participant must live in the Sydney Metropolitan area and be:
aged 15 years or older (to access Small Business Coaching you must be at least 18 years of age or older)
an Australian citizen or a visa holder with working rights that allows the visa holder to remain in Australia for at least 24 months or access income support payments
Must meet any additional eligibility criteria specific to the service(s) you have chosen. Eligible participants must not:
be enrolled in full-time secondary education
have received assistance from Self-Employment Assistance within the past 12 months
have filed for bankruptcy and still be classified as bankrupt (If your particpant has filed for bankruptcy, they will need to provide discharge papers).

Help your participant start their small business
Self-Employment Assistance offers the support your participant needs to create and run a successful small business. The program provides:
New business training
After a Business Coach reviews your participant’s business idea, they will advise which training is best suited to their needs:
- BSB30220 Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business (13 weeks, 2 days a week)
- BSBSS00103 New Business Ventures Skill Set (self-paced 8 weeks)
- BSBSS00102 Micro Business Skill Set (self-paced 6 weeks)
Upon completing any of these training options, your participant will have a business plan to move forward in their self-employment journey.
Flexible online classes
We understand the need for flexibility which is why your participant has the option of attending business classes either in person or online at a time that suits them to allow them to fit it into their schedule.
Ongoing business support
Through Self-Employment Assistance your participant will receive one-on-one Small Business Coaching during the first year of establishing their new business. Note: Small Business Coaching is subject to the approval of your participant’s business plan.

Exploring self-employment workshops
If your participant isn’t ready to start their own business but is interested in understanding more about being a business owner, we also offer online, five-day workshops that introduce them to self-employment. These workshops provide practical information and the opportunity to network and discuss ideas. You also may be eligible for a Progress Payment if your participant completes this workshop.
Locations and online availability
MTC Australia offers Self-Employment Assistance throughout the Sydney Metropolitan area, with flexible online and face-to-face delivery options to ensure accessibility.
Upon application completion, we’ll assess their suitability, assign a course start date, and provide a dedicated Business Coach to evaluate the commercial viability of their business venture.
