MTC was established in 1989 in Marrickville by a team of just three. Now we’re a group of 450 dedicated people working at more than 40 locations across NSW and Queensland and every year we support 20,000 people with new skills, confidence and opportunities.

Explore being your own boss

Starting a small business brings many factors to consider and that’s why at MTC we help you understand what self-employment means to you through the Exploring Self-Employment workshops.

Discover self-employment

Our workshops are designed to help you understand all you need to know to start your own business. You’ll gain clarity on whether running a business is right for you and what your next steps should be. If you’re ready to learn more about self-employment, we’re here to support you!

Eligibility for the workshops

To join our Exploring Self-Employment Workshops, you must:

Be aged 15 years or older.

Be legally allowed to work in Australia (no working holiday or student visa holders).

You must not have filed for bankruptcy and still be classified as bankrupt.

Additional criteria apply for some services.

Special eligibility cohort

Even if you work more than 25 hours per week, you may still be eligible if you belong to a Special Eligibility Cohort, including:

  • Retrenched workers
  • Veterans
  • Family members of serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel

Serving ADF veterans with a confirmed transition date can access our services regardless of their weekly work hours. Partners and adult children of serving ADF members are also eligible, no matter how many hours they work each week.

What you will learn

Our five-day online workshop helps you determine if your business idea can become a real and sustainable business. Over the course of the 5-day workshop, we will cover the following:

Day 1: Being an entrepreneur

In this workshop we discuss everything that’s involved in becoming an entrepreneur from mindset to overcoming obstacles.

 

Day 2: Business idea and validation

This workshop will discuss the best ways to ideate as well as validate your idea to help ensure that your business concept has legs.

Day 3: Finance

This workshop discusses all things finance and will highlight a lot of the hidden costs involved in running and maintaining your business.

Day 4: Marketing

The marketing workshop will showcase why marketing is so important including proven methods for setting up and running your business promotion.

Day 5: Digital strategies and next steps

The final workshop will give you valuable digital strategies to get you started.

 

Our workshops are run by small business experts who have more than a decade of hands-on experience. Our experts are seasoned professionals in small business management and operations who provide budding business owners with the tools to succeed.
